CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

Catching his opponent’s blade with a hooking motion, Thorn stepped forward and thrust, nearly skewering the spectral general through the chest. It had been almost two hours since he had begun the fight, and already an entire round of spectral soldiers should have spawned and spread out, but instead they all stood nearby, watching him as he fought. The spectral general fell back, his steps heavy as he tried to regain his balance. Thorn wasn’t about to let him and advanced, reversing his halberd and striking with the butt end at the general’s leg. Sweeping his foot to the side, Thorn spun, slamming a back kick into the general’s side and throwing him to the ground.

Instead of following up with a killing strike, which he would have done had this been a true battlefield, Thorn stopped. He planted the butt end of his halberd on the ground as he watched the general struggle to his feet. To his credit, the spectral general had never once lost his grip on his spear, and now that he was defeated, the general threw the spear down and bowed. It was clear Thorn had won. In a flash, the general was gone, reabsorbed back into the shrine. For a moment, Thorn didn’t know what was going to happen. He was surrounded by nearly 2,000 spectral soldiers, all of whom were staring at him. While it wouldn’t be hard for him to escape, the thought of 2,000 enemies attacking him all at once still gave him pause. For a moment, everything hung in silence.

[Ding! You have captured a spectral shrine.]

The notification startled Thorn, and after a moment, all of the spectral soldiers vanished. They were reabsorbed into the shrine, and Thorn could feel his points shooting up as they were registered as his kills. It was normal for a shrine to reset after it was captured, and when Thorn walked up to it, holding up his token, he saw the symbol in the crystal shifting to represent that it was controlled by the Temple of Man. Curious about its construction, Thorn reached up to touch the crystal.

[Ding! Would you like to upgrade the shrine? Cost, 10,000 points.]

The notification took him aback, and he stared at it for a moment before calling out to Eve.

“Do you know what this is?”

“It looks like an upgrade window, Thorn,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Clearly, you can use it to upgrade the shrine.”

“Well, sure, I can see that. But what does that mean?” He asked, to which Eve shrugged.

“Your guess is clearly as good as mine. Well, that’s not true. My guess is probably a lot better than yours. I would assume it would increase the quality of the spectral soldiers it spawns.”

“And that’s a good thing?” Thorn asked.

“Well, that depends, doesn’t it?” Eve said. “I mean, if we think about this like a tower defense game, then yes, upgrading your towers to make it harder for your opponents to capture is certainly a good idea.”

“How many points do I have?” Thorn asked.
